When to use PPC vs. SEO?

VERTX Sales Engine Optimization is the art of website design with Search Engine Marketing (PPC) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The crazy thing is SEO companies are springing up all over the place. 1 man shops to teams of so called experts.

The challenge with PPC is that anyone with a desire to build a business can within hours setup a website and spend money on Google AdWords and start to attract business. The issue is there is no sure thing with PPC --- so one could blow all of the budget and get nothing in return. I guess this is true for all types of advertisement. I have spent tones of money on radio ads, print ads and call center reps --- only to figure out that the campaigns will not work. Content Relevance -- does it matter?

The best way to think about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and ranking is to think about the way we would hire someone. I am sure as manager of most businesses we had to hire and fire staff at some point in our career. Take a moment to reflect on how you go about selecting the right candidate for the job?

Do you simply look at someones resume and experience and hire them? Likely not! Most hiring managers select a small set of results from a stack of resumes. We look at the experience from the resume before making a decision to invite a handful of candidates to come meet with us.

During the interview process we are checking out experience, feel for how they might work in organization and if there is chemistry or feel for the right fit or should I say "is the candidate reflecting the correct content relevance?"

Typically, if the personality and experience fit the job description and the references check out --- as hiring managers, we extend a job offer to hire the candidate.

Search Engine Optimization is very similar and ranking on Google, Yahoo & Bing works in a similar manner. The Sales Boost Campaign


After several weeks of deliberation I have finally come to the conclusion that we need to move forward aggressively with "The Boost" campaign. This is an exciting campaign where we should be able to promote and differentiate our capabilities from many other Search Engine Optimization service providers.

Over the next few months we will work on posting a significant amount of content regarding our marketing and promotions of the SEO services using "The Boost" campaign.

Do you know how many leads you need?


It amazes me that so many customers of ours when we engage them, they have no clue on how much sales they need to generate. This is often surprising because most Companies can not support unlimited customer acquisition.

Example: a resturant can only seat so many people at a time and hope for a good turn-over rate so that they can turn the tables fast enough during rush hours.

Example: HVAC service company can only support so much business in a day before they are maxed out.

In any case, this is a very important thought prior to deciding how to go about marketing and where to spend the money. Lets say a flooring company needs to generate 10 more sales per month --- does not matter what that might be.

We have to work backwards from this number, we need to then figure out what the historical close ratio for this business is. Lets say its 50% -- that means we need to generate a minimum of 20 leads per month to get 10 sales.

However, we know that if the lead does not walk through the showroom, then the lead will not materalize. So, based on further analysis, its clear we need to get almost 100 leads where only 20 will walk through the showroom and 10 will lead to sales.

Now we are getting closer to figuring out what needs to be done. So we can explore Google AdWords or other Search Engine Marketing (SEM) options but we find out that the Client has a real issue with marketing budget and they need a flat budget but yet continue to see at least 10 sales per month.

This is when we go to work, we figure out from researching the keywords. Which keywords will take the least amount of time to rank on Google, Yahoo & MSN on page 1 and allow us to maintain these keywords ranking on page 1. Why because at least 10% of the traffic for the selected keywords are clicks and we figure out the click through rate to leads to make sure our Clients get the maximum leads, sales and profits from our efforts.

When all of this work is done RIGHT, then the Client is happy and often wants to add more keywords. The best part about SEO services is the marketing costs stay flat and when the keywords are ranked on page 1 of Google, Yahoo and MSN -- staying on top bring in leads and sales for our Clients month-after-month.

Can you get me on Page 1 of Google then I will pay you for SEO service


Yesterday I visited with a potential client for the 2nd time. They spend $8K for marketing all year and mostly focus on Air Conditioning & Heating Services. So clearly they are struggling with the decision to buy another service like Search Engine Marketing (SEM) / Search Engine Optimization (SEO) @ a monthly rate of $499.99 for local.

So, I told them to try our services and pay us when we get them to page 1 of Google -- for 5 keywords. Further more, their website needs complete re-work and its burning them up that its not completed well. I told them we would do the design and content port and we will do it on site, locally so that they can see what's going on. To make things even better --- we told them they do not have to pay us unless they are delighted with the website design and SEO services.

I am not sure what else I can do to earn someone's business? There is ZERO risk and you would think this owner would jump on board...there is no catch and its all performance based agreement.

They told me to connect with them this Thu. to get a decision to proceed or not.

Broadcast Media vs. Internet Media


What is broadcast media --- News Paper, Magazine (all Print), TV (cable, local, national), Radio.
What is Internet Media (new media) --- Everything on the web meaning: Search Engine Optimization, Website Design, Social Media, Blogs, Video Distribution, RSS Feeds, Press Release, and so on.

The confusion is just starting to blend in marketing because TV, Radio is starting to converge with Internet and mobile. You see broadcast media is design to deliver a message and the advertiser is in control of delivering this message when the consumer is watching this medium. If you were not hungry for a pizza and you saw an ad you might decide to order a pizza.

Internet is more interactive, which means that the consumer is in control of what he/she wants. This can be a positive or negative for different types of companies. Positive for those who understand the power of being found on page 1 of Google, Yahoo, MSN (BING) --- just when the consumer is looking for your products and services. This can be via Google AdWords or Organic Search but the key here is to be found.

When you have knowledge and ability about a specific subject matter and potentially known in the Industry as an expert in the subject, "you know who you are" --- don't you get frustrated when others interested in hiring you but just will not spend the time to listen?

So, I had a great meeting with a mid-size client and they want to know how to dominate the web and generate 96% of leads from the web and get rid of the current slow process of using sales teams to generate this.

Google Black Listed Site FIXED


Seems like we got into a little bit of an issue. We have a website designer who created a site but because of in decision on the customers part left some content on the index.html page in small 2 points and dull colors.

This was information which the client needed to tell us what service areas they service. Well you know how things go, 10 others things takes up priority and bang you forget about it until the Search Engine Optimization person in charge of the accounts says: "why is Google keywords not ranking while MSN & Yahoo is moving up?, I am doing everything I can to get it ranked".

In any case, we figure this out and fix the issue and request Google website ranking cops a chance to resubmit our clients website and see what happens. We this is totally our fault and it could not have happened to a more nicer customers. Based on our calculation we lost app. 3 to 5 weeks of effort / leads and sales.

So, how do we make sure our client is happy --- well as the owner of the Company, in my opinion, we should do everything in our power to get our client ranked on Google, Yahoo and MSN and keep him on Page 1 for at least 2 months before we invoice him again. I think that is fair and the most proper things we can do!!!
