Run the SEO - Return on Investment (ROI) model prior to hiring an SEO firm


Search Engine Optimization does not mean increase in website traffic. You should only hire Search Engine Optimization (SEO) experts when you have completed a through understanding of what keywords you want to deliver and drive your sales volumes.

This is how you do the math:

1. Figure out app. number of sales you want so that you will be happy investing in SEO services.
2. Ask the SEO company and/or 3rd party research report on the keywords to figure out the past search completed on Google, Yahoo & MSN
3. Assume you will get 10% of the keywords search volumes to visit your website if you are on page 1 for that keyword
4. Assume that 1% all website traffic will become sales


So, here is how you have to look at hiring Search Engine Optimization experts --- lets say you are a tree removing service who want to expand sales by adding 5 new customer per month from Internet marketing but Google AdWords, and other ads are too expensive, it will cost $2/click --- in order to generate 5 sales per month you will need to focus on low competition (for fast results) search keywords with at least 5,000 search on keywords like "tree removal The Woodlands".

Tree Removal The Woodlands = 5,000 search = 10% click = 500 x $2 (PPC) = $1K/month

Business is slow during winter months "Bullshit" - Lots of leads & sales via web


I hear from many customers (typically 1st time Internet lead generation clients) --- I don't want to spend money to leverage SEO service or Google AdWords, i.e. marketing dollar during the winter months because of the holidays and we typically don't see a return on our marketing dollars.

This statement is "so true" because these B2B and B2C customers are trained to leverage traditional forms of marketing, i.e. Print Media (Postcards, Door Hangers, News Paper, Magazine, Coupon Discount Flyers, etc.) and Broadcast Media (TV & Radio).

The difference between old media or traditional media marketing vs. new media or Internet / Mobile media marketing are significant. Traditional media is designed to shake the trees and create a desire for the product or service. While Internet media gives the power to the consumer and he/she searches for what they need NOW --- immediately.

In my opinion its much better to get the lead from a consumer looking for exactly what you are selling, right now, than to drum up desires of potentially making a customer want your products or services. When I am looking for stuff on Google, Yahoo & MSN search --- its because I need the information or want the product now or within a very short-time. Additionally, I typically find what i am looking for within page 1 or 2 of my search or i change the keywords to see it will land me better results.

I say what I mean and I can back it up when I tell my customers that the winter months are slow and that its "bullshit" statement. Here are some examples of searches completed in Sep. in Houston, TX area:

These are actual numbers from Google AdWords - Keywords Report -- can your business even support 1% customer acquisition rate --- most like not. Heck, even if I am totally wrong and you attract 0.01% --- 1% of 1%, this Search Engine Optimization (SEO) + Google AdWords for Wood Flooring would attract a minimum of 45 sales per month --- NOT LEADS, THESE ARE ACTUAL SALES. Avg. Wood Flooring invoice in Houston, TX is app. $4K. Potential revenues for a flooring company working with us would generate in a so call slow
season: $4K x 45 sales = $180K. If 20% of this is profit = $36K. The owner take home would range between $20K - $40K/month in a so call slow season. Google AdWords smart SEO Service

Google AdWords is designed to be smart -- its simple, its measurable, its designed for the average "joe" to figure it out and its sooo easy you can setup the ads and let it run.

One of the best self help books i read over the years is the "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey. Somewhere in that book he discusses how it takes years to build up a savings account by making a steady deposit but it take just a minute to spend it all....that is so true. You save years for that home or car and then in a second you buy it and the money is gone!!

Sure, you have gained some asset in return --- but so often with Advertisement, weather is be online with Google AdWords, Yahoo Ambassador, Microsoft AdExcellence --- or print or broadcast media; you have to be able to measure your return on investment.

What bugs me most about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is that we has an industry have not yet come up with a standard setup of measures to demonstrate how SEO services done right actually returns 10x better return and better value than online, offline and tradition media.
